Dancing…….
I enjoy country music!
There are a few times when the lyrics of a song have been a bit ‘bluesy’ but there have also been many times I have been either challenged or inspired.
I enjoy the rhythm of this kind of music and find the stories behind the songs very interesting.
The times when I have given great emphasis on listening to the words being sung (As I try so hard to develop my great singing voice!) have given me plenty of opportunities to ponder deeper and, as I sift through the lyrics, I understand more of the story that is being shared.
And there are a variety of stories to be heard.
One artist I do enjoy listening to is Tim Mc Graw.
I find that most of his songs hold a depth to the words sung, the story is clear and often he shares life lessons that may have very well been his experience. But even if they have not been, I have found that they do bring some amount of truth that is worth pondering further.
The words/phrases that left an impression on me the other day were:
“I’m learning who you’ve been Ain’t who you’ve got to be”
This small bunch of words is such an encouragement.
Where we have come from, what we have experienced, done or achieved is not who we have to be. All this does not represent who I can be – yes it is a part of who I am – it is a great accumulation of what I can be come, and has built my character, but it is not what I have to settle for being.
Oh how true this is!
This is a truth from God. God sees the person that I am to become, He believes and knows there is so much more for me to achieve and that He is able to use me for.
“There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears”. Philippians 1:6
Yes I too am learning, that what I have been, is not who I have to be!
The other phrase was:
“I still got a few more dances with the devil”
The significant word in this phrase is DANCE! This word holds a treasured meaning to me…..
I will share more on that next week.
Here are the lyrics of the song; you may like to read over them as well (I won’t tell anyone that you read a country music song)
Happy reading (and singing!)

“Better Than I Used To Be”
I know how to hold a grudge
I can send a bridge up in smoke
And I can’t count the people I’ve let down, the hearts I’ve broke
You ain’t gotta dig too deep
If you wanna find some dirt on me
I’m learning who you’ve been
Ain’t who you’ve got to be
It’s gonna be an uphill climb
Aww honey I won’t lie
I ain’t no angel
I still got a few more dances with the devil
I’m cleaning up my act little by little
I’m getting there
I can finally stand the man in the mirror I see
I ain’t as good as I’m gonna get
But I’m better than I used to be
I’ve pinned a lot of demons to the ground
I’ve got a few old habits left
But there’s still one or two I might need you to help me get
Standing in the rain so long has left me with a little rust
But put some faith in me
And someday you’ll see
There’s a diamond under all this dust
I ain’t no angel
I still got a few more dances with the devil
I’m cleaning up my act little by little
I’m getting there
I can finally stand the man in the mirror I see
I ain’t as good as I’m gonna get
But I’m better than I used to be
I ain’t no angel
I still got a few more dances with the devil
But I’m cleaning up my act little by little
I’m getting there
I can finally stand the man in the mirror I see
I ain’t as good as I’m gonna get
But I’m better than I used to be
